Wizz Air Becomes First Airline to Offer Direct Flights from London to Medina

New Route from London Gatwick to Medina Announced

Wizz Air is set to make history as the first airline to operate direct flights from London Gatwick (LGW) to Medina (MED). This new route, launching on August 1, 2025, will be operated using the Airbus A321XLR, offering enhanced comfort and fuel efficiency.

The airline expects to facilitate over 174,000 seats annually, significantly improving accessibility to one of Saudi Arabia’s most important cultural and religious hubs.

Strengthening UK-Saudi Arabia Connectivity

As part of its expanding presence in the Middle East, Wizz Air’s direct route to Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport (MED) in Medina will support:
Religious tourism – Facilitating travel for pilgrims visiting the Prophet’s Mosque
Business travel – Enhancing commercial ties between the UK and Saudi Arabia
Cultural exchange – Strengthening connectivity between Europe and the Middle East

With fares starting at £233.99, tickets are available now via Wizz Air’s website and mobile app.

Medina: A Key Destination in Saudi Vision 2030

Medina is recognized as Islam’s second holiest city, attracting millions of visitors annually. The introduction of this new direct route aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, the Kingdom’s ambitious economic diversification and tourism growth strategy.

This initiative supports Saudi Arabia’s goal of increasing international air connectivity, making the country more accessible to global travelers.

Expanding Long-Haul Budget Travel from the UK

Wizz Air’s Managing Director, Marion Geoffroy, expressed enthusiasm about this expansion:

“We are delighted to announce this new route from London Gatwick to Medina. This marks an important milestone for Wizz Air as we continue expanding beyond Europe. Our goal is to make air travel more accessible and affordable for all passengers.”

Stephanie Wear, VP of Aviation Development at London Gatwick, highlighted the significance of this launch:

“Medina will be a brand-new destination from London Gatwick, adding more travel options for our passengers. Given Medina’s religious and cultural importance, we expect strong demand for this route.”

Meanwhile, Majid Khan, CEO of the Air Connectivity Program, emphasized that this initiative is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader strategy to strengthen tourism and international air travel infrastructure.

Wizz Air’s Growing Middle East Presence

The London Gatwick to Medina route marks Wizz Air’s second long-haul connection from the UK, following the upcoming London Gatwick to Jeddah service launching on March 31, 2025.

With the Airbus A321XLR’s extended range and fuel efficiency, Wizz Air is reinforcing its commitment to affordable, long-haul travel, expanding its reach across the Middle East.
